St Nicolas’ Church

This view, looking up towards the High Street from the opposite side of the river, has not changed a great deal. But look carefully at today’s photo and you will notice that one building on the left-hand side has gone. It was called Guildford House and was the home of the Crooke family whose brewery was beside the river. St Nicolas’ Church was consecrated in 1876. It replaced an earlier short-lived nineteenth-century church that was very poorly designed, uncomfortable for worshippers and had a leaky roof!
